Muffin Break Wins Coffee Championships

Muffin Break has won first place in this year’s DaVinci Gourmet Coffee Chain Championship held in Sydney last weekend. The premium bakery café franchise, owned by Foodco Group has successfully placed at the top for a third year in a row.

“Our baristas were judged on the core values and skills of our industry and to place first and second for the third year in a row is a testament to our employees and the training systems Foodco operates,” said Jeremy Regan, Head of Coffee, Jahnus (Foodco).

Represented by team captain Nina Cosgrove and baristas Celine Kim (Roselands), Helia Valenzuela (Penrith) and Melissa Hall (Moore Park), Muffin Break were crowned the best coffee chain against some of the country’s leading coffee chains with Jamaica Blue, also owned by Foodco Group coming in a close second.

The competition consisted of three intense rounds, where the baristas were tested on their coffee-making and customer service skills;

  1. The latté art challenge required competitors to replicate three patterns as determined by spinning the Dairy Farmers Latte Art Wheel
  2. Challenge two saw teams create a signature beverage using DaVinci Gourmet syrups and provide a business case to convince the judges why their creation should be included on their chain’s menu
  3. Lastly, teams were judged on their service (a card with 20 coffee orders was drawn at random) and in ten minutes the team had to complete the 20 orders which were judged on accuracy, time, consistency, cleanliness and customer service.

The competition was designed to determine the cream of the crop and Muffin Break prevailed, thanks to rigorous training, by Foodco’s Coffee Trainer, Simon Au-Yeung and Jeremy Regan Head of Coffee at Jahnus (Foodco’s coffee roaster), along with the team’s expert skills (as each barista has won Muffin Break’s Annual Barista Competition at least once), hard work and dedication.

“Coming first and second place, for a third year running is such a great feat by our Foodco franchises,” said Jeremy Regan Head of Coffee, Jahnus.

“Our baristas were judged on the core values and skills of our industry and to place first and second for the third year in a row is a testament to our employees and the training systems Foodco operates.”

“All of our baristas undergo regular training to ensure top-quality coffee is served at every Muffin Break and Jamaica Blue store every day.”

“We have in-house training programs, run by Simon Au-Yeung, that support our baristas and coffee experts on providing the best possible coffee daily.”
